Watch Dogs

Label:

Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch_Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice.

Chicago's overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city's technology and information - including key data on all of the city's residents.

You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you'll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You'll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy... and more.

THE CITY IS OUR WEAPON
Watch_Dogs takes place in a fully simulated living city. Using Aiden's smartphone, you have real-time control over the city's infrastructure. Trap your enemy in a 30-car pileup by manipulating the traffic lights. Stop a train, and then board it to evade the authorities. Narrowly escape capture by quickly raising a drawbridge. Anything connected to the ctOS can become your weapon.

STREET JUSTICE
Living in inner city Chicago, where violence is often answered by violence, Aiden has learned how to take the fight to the streets. Deliver devastating blows with your baton, or experience electrifying shoot-outs with physics simulation that rivals anything in the shooter category. Throughout his journey, Aiden will take on his foes with more than 30 traditional weapons.

HIGH OCTANE DRIVING
Luckily, Aiden won't always need to traverse Chicago's streets on foot. Ubisoft Montreal has partnered with studios such as Ubisoft Reflections, the acclaimed team behind the award-winning Driver series, to provide a suite of vehicles bursting with horsepower. You'll get behind the wheel of more than 65 cars – each with state-of-the-art physics and handling – to explore Chicago's vast and intricate roadways.

EVERYTHING IS UNDER CONTROL
Disrupt, the all-new game engine powering Watch_Dogs, uses advanced processing to deliver stunning visuals and an incredibly immersive world.

DYNAMIC NAVIGATION
Not only does Watch_Dogs give you the ability to take advantage of the ctOS, it also allows you to explore the many layers of Chicago itself. Cut through buildings, scale rooftops, and explore the city's dangerous underground to catch your target.

FIFA 14

Label:

FIFA 14 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One proudly boasts an entirely new engine, and though it may have been built from the ground up it’s still very much within touching distance of its current-gen sibling. The key differences are largely superficial, and while that sounds like criticism, it isn’t when the foundation is so good. That means it’s still a brilliant game, crammed with all the modes and features you’d expect from FIFA (that hasn’t always been the case with launch versions of FIFA). Occasionally some of the differences affect the way it plays, suggesting at where the series may go in the future, but for the most part they simply make FIFA 14 into a more polished and pleasurable version of the same experience.

Thankfully FIFA preserves the unparalleled variety of the current-gen iteration. This is not to be sniffed at, since this hasn’t always been the case – the Wii U launch version of FIFA 13 was a severely gutted version. But this is FIFA, as you know it – from one-off fixtures to ongoing seasons, online friendlies, a selection of that week’s matches, a career mode, and skill games. And of course the revamped Ultimate Team, one of FIFA’s most popular modes. It’s all present and correct. And if you’ve already started the season on current-gen, progress in modes like Ultimate Team is transferable. For a sports title, FIFA still can’t be beaten for its sheer variety.

The most notable difference is perhaps unsurprisingly the way it looks. Graphically it’s much sharper, smoother, and more detailed, with everything from player likenesses to the texture of the pitch benefitting. Up close, players still look a little dead behind the eyes and move awkwardly when shaking hands or getting substituted. But there are still loads of little details that impress, like the way fabric ripples as a player moves or two balls being on the pitch at once thanks to an over-eager ball-boy trying to restart the match. Taken individually they’re minor improvements, but have a really great cumulative effect.

The best aspect of next-gen FIFA 14 is undoubtedly the extended range and depth of player animation. Current versions of FIFA use a limited stock of core animations to represent a wide range of different actions. There was no unique through-ball animation, for instance, with the game using the animation for a more generic pass. But next-gen FIFA 14 makes no such compromise. There’s so much variety, and though it doesn’t directly impact how you play, it makes what you do look so much more realistic and visually appealing. Now when you  hit a cross-field pass, the player will open up their body and really dig under the ball. It feels like you're making that type of pass. And this extends to most actions on the pitch, whether that's playing a cheeky through-ball with the outside of the boot or dinking a low pass out wide. While watching back a goal I scored in slow motion, I spotted the player gently rolling his foot over the ball, taking it away from the defender. This wasn't down to anything I did – it's all automated, a product of context – but it made the match feel much less mechanical and more attractive to play and watch.

Changes to gameplay aren’t as extensive as I was anticipating, though there are a couple of areas in which this version does feel slightly different. When defending on the 360 and PS3, I normally apply lots of pressure onto the opposing team and use the slide tackle to win back the ball. It's crude and heavy-handed, but it works a lot of the time. In the Xbox One and PS4 version this is a much less viable tactic, since players have more self-awareness. So when you go in for a sliding challenge, it's highly likely the player in possession will hurdle the incoming tackle. It’s far more authentic, and makes defending much more about maintaining your shape, closing down play, and tracking runs – all of which is aided greatly by the players’ improved positional awareness and decision making. It does a better job of approximating the real-life sport, yet importantly doesn’t make it any less fun. Those heightened player reactions again also enhance the look of matches in other ways; for instance, sometimes when I shot on goal, if there was a player in the way, they’d do their best to duck out of the way of the incoming strike. Again, it subtly but potently adds to the realism.

Another noteworthy change is the ball feels much more like an independent entity than ever before. During matches there are now instances in which the ball breaks free – after a rebound or misplaced pass – and both teams have to chase it down, rather than possession simply alternating between the two. It’s not revolutionary but I definitely haven’t encountered that openness in FIFA before. It creates a much more lively, physical experience, with more tussling and physical matchups. It produces a more realistic representation of the sport, and I found it a more enjoyable, unpredictable, and a slightly more competitive experience.

That sense of life is strengthened by the improved stadiums and crowds. Spectators are now a fully three-dimensional, reactive presence – the home and away fans respond differently depending on the ebb and flow of the game. It’s not incredibly varied – you can still spot the same faces and shirts – but it’s a massive, long-awaited improvement. Stadiums are touch more detailed, too, with some well-known grounds even having exteriors, but this is mostly limited to the pre-match credits. It’s a really nice presentational flourish, though doesn't dramatically improve the experience.

Tropico 5

Label:

I am not the man you want running your country. Over the course of my extended presidency I've smuggled rum into a prohibition America, sided with Axis powers during both World Wars, systematically stripped away the liberty of my citizens, and assassinated a grandma for opposing my regime. I'm not proud of these things, but I'm glad that I felt the need to do them. For all Tropico 5 adds to the city-building series—and all the ways it doesn't advance the formula enough—its greatest success is in pushing you towards the murkier aspects of dictatorial rule.
Rather than inhabit the genre's favoured role as the floating god-mayor of urban planning, in Tropico 5 you play as a banana republic's ruling dynasty. You still use a top-down view to place buildings and trade goods, but must also navigate the island's politics—surviving both the international machinations of world superpowers, and your populace's desire for democracy and happiness.
Where Haemimont's previous two Tropico games took place around the Cold War, this time the action spans across multiple eras. It changes the pace and shape of a sandbox campaign, offering a longer period of island management that encourages a broader range of industry and development. More importantly, it restricts your early-game options, making for a harder fought battle to stay in power.
After declaring independence from the crown in the Colonial Era, my people asked for elections. Foolishly, I agreed, having been conditioned by previous games to expect an easy win. Only, without access to the advanced industry that would normally bulk up my war chest, I wasn't able to effectively address the needs of the populace. Instead of securing power through the creation of a paradise, I did it via the more realistic tools of intimidation and election fraud.
Throughout your rule, optional objectives appear over your palace, offering bonuses for filling desired criteria. Usually it's in the form of constructing specific buildings to appease one of the political factions, but occasionally something more interesting and wide-ranging appears. My brief bootlegging period was a direct result of one of these missions, and its promised reward of more favourable trade prices. The downside was twofold: my island became a haven for crime lords, and America became very angry. Luckily, when a country invades you, they never pose a serious threat; instead choosing to stomp around like angry toddlers, destroying bits of the city.
The missions help to add a dynamic element to the sandbox mode, but their limitations are clear. Instead of reacting to the specific choices you've made, they're pulled seemingly at random from a pool of possibilities. Throughout I was offered objectives that I'd already fulfilled, and instantly credited with success upon accepting them. Better implemented are the requests that come from agreeing to negotiate with protesters, which are, at least, offered in direct response to your island's failings.
More significant are the potential rewards these missions offer. That's because, unlike in previous games, your Swiss bank account finally has a purpose. This time there's a persistent element to proceedings—your dynasty expanding across every game, be it sandbox, multiplayer or campaign scenario. You can switch between family members each election, and they all offer a different global bonus. It's these bonuses that can be upgraded with embezzled funds. Now when a faction offers you a choice between extra trade routes, additional finance or your own private bank account, it feels like a more meaningful decision.
For all its improvements, Tropico 5 is still iterating on the template set by its predecessors. In many ways, that's a good thing—it's a formula that, behind the overt political caricatures, is deceptively clever. The key is in the way it simulates every citizen, letting you select, follow and harass them individually. The scale is well measured, too. Islands don't feel small, but their population is low enough that there's no abstraction of data. That has a dramatic effect on how you construct your cities, because the way you identify problems feels natural. An icon may tell you that a factory isn't receiving its required raw materials, but you can manually track the production and transportation of those goods to identify and address the bottleneck.
The problem is that, with every successive release, Haemimont are essentially making a more refined version of Tropico 3. Even when spread across a longer timeline, Tropico 5 fails to meaningfully move the series forward. It still has the same cheerful vibrance, the same salsa-infused soundtrack, and the same selection of infrastructure, industry and tourism.
If you're new to Tropico, don't be put off: this is the version deserving of your vote. But as a returning ruler, I was hoping for more of a revolution.

Daylight

Label:

Waking up in an abandoned hospital with only your cell phone for illumination, you explore the institution’s dark criminal past as you attempt to escape. In Daylight no two experiences are the same, and it is best played alone in the dark.

DAYLIGHT introduces gamers to a procedurally generated world that replicates the horrifying nature of Daylight over and over again, but creates a different environment for each new game. Each time the player begins a new game, they experience a new world with new content and encounters; from the layout of the building and the things they seek to the events they encounter, it is never the same experience twice.

Daylight is a first-person survival horror (FPSH) game that challenges your very grasp on reality. The areas of Mid Island will never be the same twice, so being aware of your surroundings in the maze of corridors is the key to staying alive. Fortunately, you have a few tools at your disposal… First, in addition to being your trusty light source, your cellphone also acts as a mini-map, marking the areas you’ve explored as well as key locations you come across. You will also find two additional sources of light: flares, which cast a flickering protective glare and can keep evil spirits at bay, and glowsticks, which can reveal hidden secrets.

As players explore these mazes, their progress will be impeded by doors sealed with runes. In order to open them, you must find a cursed relic from the island’s shadowy past, but it will only appear once you have uncovered enough scraps of paper: forgotten memories scattered around the passageways.

But this isn’t just a simple exploration game. Mid Island is crawling with souls thirsting for revenge. As you traverse the hospital, prison, and more, your threat level builds, making your presence known to the island’s residents. Can you unlock the mysteries of the past and survive until Daylight…?
