BlackBerry Messenger will re released on iOS & Android

BlackBerry Messenger goes to iOS & Android

As some of you might know, speculation regarding the availability of BlackBerry Messenger (also known as BBM) on the Android and iOS has initially surfaced back in 2011. Not much has been revealed ever since, but here we are, nearing mid-2013 and we actually have official confirmation that BBM really is on its way towards the Google Play and Apple App Store.

Have you been waiting for this moment since 2011? Is this the first time you hear about this BlackBerry service being planned for Android and iOS? Regardless, you’ll find more official details right after the break.

Thorsen Heins presentation at BlackBerry Live 2013

During a recent keynote presentation, BlackBerry CEO Thorsen Heins has announced that BBM will soon be available for download on iOS and Android devices. The app will be available for free and it will be compatible with iOS 6 as well as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher.

At this point, Heins expects BlackBerry Messenger to become available sometime this summer. An exact release date could not be given, as BBM is still subject to approvals by both the App Store and Google Play.

As to what the app has to offer, at launch, the amount of features will actually be limited. Both the Android and iOS port of the BBM app will at first support only messaging and groups, but Thorsen Heins did reveal that BlackBerry is planning on updating the app, later on, with other features such as screen share, BBM Channels, as well as BBM Voice.

That’s all we know for now, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out, so stick around if you want to be kept in the loop.
